DEATH IN DIRE POVERTY. TSARIST GENERAL'S SAD END. (Received June 8, 11.15 p.m.) A. and N.Z.-Sun. PARIS. June 8. The death has occurred of General Peter Kalitine, the Russian conqueror of Erzeroum. General Kalitine had lived for months in extreme poverty and died in an almshouse. After the victory at Erzeroum the late Tsar presented him with a gold sabre studded with diamonds, and the Allies also generously decorated him. After the war the general fled to Paris, where he scorned charity, and although ho was 74 years of age he tried to support his invalid daughter and his five other children by manual work. 1 — (.- The Russians won a great victory at Erzeroum on February 16, 1916, against the Turks, when they captured the city after five days' fighting. Erzeroum was the principal Turkish stronghold in Asia' Minor. Tne Russians took 235 officers and 12,753 men prisoners, and captured nine flags, 323 guns, and large military stores.
