BUTTER FOR AUSTRALIA.
EXPORTS FROM NEW ZEALAND A FAIRLY STEADY TRADE. Inquiries made in Auckland show that there has been a fairly steady trade in butter with Australia for some months. In December of last year sales were made as high as Is <Hd per lb., f.o.b. Since then there has been a good inquiry but at lower rates, averaging between Is 3d and Is 4d. A good many thousand boxes are involved by these sales but shipment has yet to bo made in some eases where delivery was required this month or in July. Business has been somewhat restricted by the difficulty in securing shipment and the fact that unless 1 butter can be landed in Sydney before the end of next month, it must come into competition with the increasing production cfiF' Australia's earlier spring. More substantial business than that between Auckland and Sydney has been done between •Wellington and Melbourne. Higher values have been obtainable in Melbourne and Wellington exporters havo been able to tako advantage of these owing to the direct shipping service botween the two ports. A Sydney prrner has the following in its issue of May 25: "Last week's arrival of 9000 boxes "i butter from New Zealand has been followed by a further shipment of 5000 boxes. Though the quantity is comparatively small, the butter is understood to have been bought at a very attractive price, which should enable it to be sold, if necessary, at below current local market rates. So far very little New Zealand butter has gone into consumption in Sydney. It may find its way to Melbourne or Perth, where (he markets are largely dependent on imported supplies."
