GREATER AUCKLAND.

Sir, —I note with some amusement that Mr. Holdsworth had no motive in attending the Tamaki meeting other than a desire to give them the benefit of its varied public experience, whereas iftr. Donaldson and myself, who, of coarse, have no public experience, were actuated by the fear that our respective districts would be forced into the city. Apparently it is only those who agree with Mr. Holdsworth that have any public spirit. Personally I am not prepared to accept Mr. Holdsworth as the last word in local government, and think there is ample room to disagree with him on the merits of the case. At the same meeting lam quoted as saying that Point ■ Chevalier paid £35,000 in rates. What I said was based on a statement of Miss Melville's to the effect that in 1921 the capital valuation of Point Chevalier was £250,000 and to-day is £750,000. I quoted the annual value as approximately £12,000 on the first figure and £37.000 on the second. It should not be necessary to misquote my figures to help the argument. A question had been put to me respecting the valuation or Tamaki, which I estimated would be £150,0C0 under the annual system, and I then referred tq the Point Chevalier figures. E. H. Potter.
