A crowd of 3000 people watched a Bplendidly-contested match between Devonport and Richmond at Carlaw Park yesterday afternoon. Devonport won by 17 points to 13 in a game that was full Of sensations. Four notable League representatives •were ordered off the field for what appeared to be trivial offences. Late in the second spell, St. George had some words with the referee and was ordered to retire. Two minutes lator Stewart, of Richmond, was sent to the side-line, and he was closely followed by Prentice (Richmond) and O'Brien (Devonport), both Auckland representatives. Within two minutes of the start, Devonport opened its score with a great goal by St. George. Devonport continued to press hard, and its forwards swept down the field, Hemingway scoring a try which St. George failed to improve. Devonport, 5; Richmond, 0. Devonport was excelling in the loose and its better team-work had Richmond continually defending. Richmond, for a period, was called on to defend solidly. Then Carroll kicked a penalty goal for Richmond. The next movement by Richmond was the best of the game. From the loose, Bass passed the ball to Dixon, who transferred to Parkes. The last-named ran well into Devonport's territory, where he cleverly passed infield to Jenkinson, who raced over for Carroll to goal. Richmond, 7; Devonport, 5. Richmond delighted the crowd with its quick, clean attacking movements, and only lack of finish prevented it from gaining more tries. Dixon who appeared to be offside, intercepted a pass and racod from half-way to score a simple try, which St. George failed to convert. Devonport, 8; Richmond, 7. Preston opened the attack for Devonport in tho second spell, gaining ground with a fine run that ended on Richmond's line. Devonport continued in the ascendancy, and from a passing run Hemingway made a good opening for Beattio to score. Hemingway failed to convert. Devonport, 11; Richmond, 7. Parkes then made a brilliant run for Richmond, which should have resulted in a try. Twice in succession Devonport had to forco. Richmond was having the best of tho game at this stage.
