AN INCORRIGIBLE ROGUE.

INDIAN SENT TO PRISON.

The criminal record of Givan Ganesh, an Indian, convicted of being an incorrigible rogue, was commented upon by Mr. Justice Herdman when prisoner appeared for sentence at tho Supreme Court yesterday.

Prisoner promised from the dock that if granted probation he would leave the country upon expiry of a sentence he is now serving.

His Honor: Ever since you came to New Zealand in 1921 you have been in crime. Tho .Judge added that, •commencing with a conviction for assault, the prisoner had since been in and ptit of gaol. Against him were 27 convictions, including some for assault, theft, wilful damage and being a rogue and vagabond. The police described prisoner as a violent man and even his countrymen gave him a bad character. Sentence of two years imprisonment was imposed. THREE TEARS FOR ASSAULT. On three charges of indecent assault on cifls aged respectively 4, 13 and 14 vears, Christopher James Gtierm f> aged 58 years, was sentenced to a year's imprisonment on each charge, the sentences being cumulative. Mr. Vialoux, for prisoner, pointed out that no physical damage had been done and said this was a case demonstrating the need for a "half-way house for treatment of men like the prisoner. His Honor said there was no possible excuse, and in passing the sentence named observed that prisoner had lo previous convictions of various kinds.
