CONCRETING OF ROADS.

MOUNT ALBERT PROGRAMME. WORK ON MAIN THOROUGHFARE FURTHER SECTION COMPLETED. With the opening yesterday of a further section of concrete in New North Road a total length of chains on one side of the road from Kingsland Post Office to Argylo Street has been made available for traffic. The new section comprises chains, stretching from the fire station to Argyle Street. A third section, up to the Morningside overbridge, is at present " curing and it is exj pected it will be ready for traffic in two | weeks. The contract, which was let by the Mount, Albert Borough Council, provides for the paving in concrete of over two miles of road from Kingsland to Mount Albert tram terminus. The contractors, Messr. H. Bray and Company, have already completed over a mile of concreting since work was commenced in March. At present operations are confined to one side* of the road but a further gang will shortly commence work on the other side. Good progress has been made in spite of showery weather, but some hindrance has resulted from the heavy clay formation encountered. A concrete mixer of the latest type has been responsible in some measure for the good progress made.. At some points it has been found necessary to alter the kerbing in order to suit the level of the concrete, and altogether about a mile of the footway has received attention. The difference between the levels of the tram-lines and the concrete has required attention and the shoulders of the tramways track have been metalled as a temporary measure. It is expected the levels of the tram lines will later be adjusted. The contractors have every confidence that the work will be completed by September. Concrete work is also being carried out in Mount Albert Road, where a contract has been let for 144 chains from the junction with the New North Road. The work, which was commenced about 10 days ago, will be carried out in two sections, provision being made in the centre of the road for tramway extension. It is expected the work will be completed in six months. WORK IN MOUNT BOSKILL. DELAY OWING TO WET WEATHER. A report presented to the Mount Roskill Road Board last evening by the engineer, Mr. J. D. Whitmore, stated the recent heavy rains considerably retarded work on the concreting of Dominion Road, but the concrete slabs were now complete, leaving only the street intersections to fill in. The western side of the road would be thrown open for traffic next Saturday as promised, and the portion between Mount Albert Road and Duke Street earlier. All the expansion joints in the concrete road in the board's section of Manukau Road had been refilled with tar and sand. Mr. L. A. Tozer complained the work of concreting Dominion Road had been unduly prolonged, causing inconvenience to residents. It was decided that the penalty for non-completion would be enforced after a month. The engineer said that on account of the continued wet weather he thought the contractors had done as well as could be expected. Mr. J. R, Robertson remarked that the best spell of fine weather came during the Easter holidays, when nobody was working. It was decided to insist that any new subdivisions must provide for roadways containing a concrete centre with a minimum width of 12ft.
