THE GRADING OF FLAX. DECREASE IN". APRIL. Owing to the unfavourable weather in April the flax grading ; figures for the Port of Auckland for, the month show a considerable decrease as compared with April, 1926. ' Following are" the returns for last month, the' 1926 figures being given in pareqthpsea ; j ; • Hemp.—Good fair, nil (95 "'bales )j; high fair, 321 bales (1193 bales); • fair, 854 bales {9ll bales); common, 625 baled (237 bales); rejected, 30 bales {32 balesj j total, 1830 bales (2468 bales). Tow.- —First grade, 34 bales. (43 boles); second grade, 207 bales (220 bales) | third grade, 220 bales (267 bales); condemned, 22 bales (41 bales); tqtal, 483 bales (840 bales). - Stripper Tow,—Stripper slips,. Bocond grade, five bales; 1926, total 68 bales. The latest report. States that the New Zealand hemp market in London is very slow. Quotations are Good fair, £37 10s; high point fair, £35 30s; low fair, £33 10s. ' . . ./• . The season is jiow drawing to a close and, with the exception of those in particularly favourable situations, the majority of the mills in the province will gradually close doWn for the winter.

PUBLIC TRUST OFFICE. BUSINESS DURING MARCH. The. following particulars of thq loan transactions bf t tHe PubKc Trust 'Office and new, business "repdrtfed: during the month ended March 31 last 1 have been supplied by the Prime Minister The amount paid out in settlement of new loans was £193,470, making a total of £2,494,445 for • the financial year which commenced on April ' l f 1926. Further new loans amounting to £202,205 were granted, bringing the total of new Joans on hand awaiting completion to £572,303, to which must ho added the offers made of loans less than the full amounts applifed for, Those amount to £183,166; making a grand total of £755,458. There are also applications on hand for additional loans amounting to £559.651. The value of the new estates accepted for administration was £536,210, and this brings the total new estates business for the year to £6.651.019—an amount exceeding • tho previous year's total by £899,672. Choice local lemons sold well, bat for poor quality lemons there was no demand Many lines of Keiffgr pears arc coming forward badly marked, awl in consequence the prices realised are low, some cases jelling: for 3s Vegetables continue to come forward in good supply, the demand for most lines being only fair. Citron melons were hard to quit, prices ranging from 2s 6d to 3s 6d a sack. Prime cauliflowers sold exceptionally weM, as much as 19s a sack being paid, compared with 14s, the best price realised last Friday In the dairy prodnce section price* remain steady "at late rates, hen eggs realising 3s 6d a dozen and duck eggs 2a lOd.
