FIRST SEA LORD.
EARL BEATTY'S GOOD WORK. NAVY ON PEACE FOOTING. (British Official "Wireless.) A. and N.Z. RUGBY, May 1. In connection with the retirement on June 30 of Admiral of the Fleet Earl Beatty from the post of First Sea Lord and the appointment of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Charles Madden to succeed him, it is pointed out that Earl Beatty was due to have retired last November. Under pressure, however, he consented to defer his resignation. When the Grand Fleet, of which he was commander-in-chief, was dispersed he took up his present duties and his period of office at the Admiralty has been. marked by a reduction of the Navy to a peace footing after the greatest war in history. It is generally agreed that this has been accomplished with a minimum of hardship and dislocation.
