VISCOUNT COWDRAY. GENEROUS PUBLIC GIFTS. (Received May 2, 5.5 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON, May 1. The death has occurred of Viscount Cowdray, aged 71. Lord Cowdray had been in poor health for several months owing to heart trouble. Flo etxpected to be well enough to travel to Aberdeen on Tuesday to receive the freedom of that city with Lady Cowdray. It is a unique distinction for a husband and a wife to be so honoured at the same time, but they had jointly given £IOO,OOO to hospitals, the university and other local objects. He died in his sleep in the midst of a happy house party gathered to assist in honouring his wife and himself. The lafje Viscount Cowdray was head of the contacting firm of S. Pearson and Son, Ltd. Hti was born in 1856. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. George Pearson, ctf Briekeydonbury, Hertford. He was ecfcicated at Eton and Harrogate. From 1895-P.910 he was Liberal member of tiie House of Commons for Colchester, of which town he was High Steward. He v;as created' a baronet in 1894, a baron in 1910, and A Viscount, in 1916. From 1918-21 he *vas Rector of Aberdeen University, and in 1917 was president of the Air Board. .Lord Cowdrav's heir is Major | the Hon. "Wfeetman Harold Pearson, who was Liberal 2VI.P. for Eye, 1906-18.
