DAIRYING RESEARCH.

An encouraging and hopeful report of the conference on dairying research, just held in Wellington, has been brought back by the Hon. George Fowlds. From its labours will result a practical apportionment of the work to be done and a coordination of effort among the agencies handling the task, This is most necessary if duplication is to be avoided : and the field is so wide that the country cannot afford to have any overlapping or needless expenditure of effoit. The need for research and the lines it should follow have been set forth by the Imi perial Economic Committee in its ; valuable report on the dairying in- : dusbry of the Empire. It has classij fied the work under the following J heads : —Methods of improved proj duction ; food values, including vita- | mins ; utilisation of milk residues ; i refrigeration; economic research. | The whole of them may not be capable of treatment in New Zealand. This country should be an ide;vl place for extensive investigation of the first subject, improved ! production. It does not follow that | the results of research in the other I branches would not be of value to ! New Zealand. Indeed, the list needs j only to be read to realise that each |of them is vital. However, the com- : j raittee. recommending that there j should be research stations through- j | out the Empire, conceived also the j idea of complete co-operation, so J that the results from each should be available for all. If, therefore, this j Dominion, concentrating on one line, could find something of fundamental value to contribute to the common ; pool, it might easily obtain in ex- ' change another discovery of equal worth. As a first step toward becoming a party to an Empire system! j of co-ordination, New Zealand has j done well to co-ordinate her own j efforts.
