Tho question whether or not they should definitely close the Waiorongomai quarry, which has been idle for some months, has been exercising the minds of members of the Piako County Council for some time., The quarry was established at a cost of £120,000, and at first the metal secured from it was favourably commented upon, but jyi.t prior to closing a bad seam was struck, tho metal from which was useless lor road-making. Tho council therefore considered it advisable to close down until it could find out if thersi was any suitable metal beyond this seam. The committee appointed to go into the matter liar, not been favourably impressed with the result of its investigations, and at the last meeting of the council recommended that no further money be spent upon, the quarry. It is now practically certain that tho quan'y will not be reopened, and it is expected that steps will t)o taken to dispose of the machinery, which is rapidly deteriorating in quality. A deputation waited upon the Pialto County Council at its last meeting in reference to the* completion of the Jdium* gakawa-Waiorongomai llond, This is the fifth time the deputation has been to the council over the same matter, The deputation claimed that the iwttletti had givi'D the council £3OO in excess of what it originally asked for and the road was no nearer completion.
