THE BOATING TRAGEDY.
RISK IN SMALL BOATS. COMMENTS BY THE CORONER. The inquest upon the victims of the recent drowning accident near Rangitoto Island was held on Saturday before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M. The three deceased who lost their lives while attempting to reach St. Heliers Bay from Rangitoto in a small boat, were Amelia Franklin., Doris Ethel Longuet and Raymond Kirkwood Mathieson. Frederick William Franklin, father of the two women victims, said he had been told by the caretaker of the island that there was plenty of accommodation there and that people were never refused shelter. Evidence w.as also given by Walter Noyes and Harold Walby, survivors of the accident. In returning a* verdict of accidental death by drowning Mr. Hunt expressed the opinion that small boats suitable for transport between a launch or yacht and the shore were unsafe for carrying several persons on long stretches of water such as that between Rangitoto and St, Heliers Bay.
