ONEHUNGA AFFAIRS.

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The Onelmnga Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. E. Covveli, presiding. The commissioner of Crown lands suggested that all the revenue from the sale of scoria from the Mount Smart reserve should be allocated for the construction oi sports grounds within the area. The council has already fixed the permanent level at 115 ft., and is allowed by law, to expend the surplus revenue on Jellicoe Park. The application of the Mangere United Football Club for a playing ground was declined. The whole of the available area has already been allocated.

The Streets Committee recommended that a suitable site for the proposed refuse destructor was the old rille range. This was adopted. The foreman reported that the whole of the work authorised in connection with the To Papa pa drainage had been com pletod, with the exception of about 250 ft. of pipes. These would be laid on completion of the .short tunnel, a small section of which still had to be driven. The Beresford Park drainage lias been completed. Seventeen building permits have been issued during the past fortnight, including five for dwellings. The pumping engineer reported that 13,251.250 gallons of water had been pumped during the fortnight. Speaking as chairman of the Finance Committee, the Mayor reported that against an estimate of £6OOO for street maintenance there had been expended £5315, besides £Bl3 advanced on street loans account- The water supply had been a source of income to the borough the receipts amounting to £9123, against £7770 the previous year. The expen ditnre was £5727, leaving a profit o~ €3396, against £IBBO in the previous yearReceipts from the Hillsborough cemetery were £2904, and expenditure £1494. exclusive of the new buildine. The Wai karaka receipts were only £344, being £41,5 less than the expenses, and this was likelv to be a regular feature in future. Motor licence fees were estimated to produce £I2OO, whereas they amounted to £2182. The fire brigade cost £865. which was £265 above the estimate. Quarry receipts totalled £1212, £6l above the expenditure. Salaries and administration cost £2673, against an estimate 0f.£2815, drainage extensions £Bl7, against £4OO and street lighting £1928, against £1550 The library began the year £37 in debit, and ended £BO in credit. Rates outstanding on March 31 amounted to £2850.
