RELICENSING OF MOTORS.
TOTAL OF 2500 TO COME. MAIN DEPOT TO CLOSE. About 2500 unlicensed motor vehicles are in Auckland garages. The main motor registration and licensing depot in the Wellesiey Street post office will close to-morrow and from Monday applications will be dealt with at the chief post office, Queen Street. Since' the last day of grace on March 31 1 about 500 licences and pairs of number plates Jiave been' issued bringing the aggregate for the main depot to over 9500. There is no obligation on motor vehicle owners to obtain new licences and plates so long as their vehicles remain in storage, and it is probable a large proportion of the 2500 are cars, trucks and motor-cycles which are being offered for sale. The destruction of several hundred obsolete black and white plates was commenced, yesterday at the Wellesiey Street depot.. These had been collected from about. 70 country and suburban post offices, and it was thought best to render them incapable of conversion to the acceptable colour combination before discarding them. The demand for drivers' licences at the city traffic department is still brisk and the issue is nearing 10,000. There are still several thousand drivers who have not renewed their tickets, and within a Tew weeks a "drive" may be expected. The new driving licences are grey, and the motorist who produces an obsolete red card when challenged will have his number taken. A "drive" on Grafton Bridge -last year netted the City Council a handsome sum in fines.
