SCHOONER IN STORM.
ROUGH NIGHT FOR CREW. TWO ON BOARD INJURED. I NARROW ESCAPE FROM REEF. ENGINES PUT OUT OF ACTION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN COItKESPONBENT. ] GrISBORNE, Monday. A rough night was experienced by the crew of the auxiliary schooner Kaia, bound from Tolaga Bay to Napier. When off Portland Island the vessel ran into a southerly gale, losing all her deck cargo and shipping heavy seas through the skylights and doors into the engineroom. The sea broke the wheel, and tore some of the deck fixtures out, slightly injuring the captain, and severely injuring the arm of one oi: the crew. To add to the difficulties, the electric lights were extinguished when the water flooded the engineroom. Steering way was completely lost, and for a time the Kaia drifted in close "proximity to the reef off Portland Island. The crew were actually preparing to take to the ship's boat. After being hove-to for the rest of the night, the little vessel turned back to shelter under Young Nick's Head, where she arrived after a very trying experience for those on boaxd, with both engines out of order. Here, cold and wot, the crew had a few hours' sleep while one engine was required.
