SOUTH AFRICA'S FLAG.

SEARCH FOR A DESIGN. WORK OF A COMMISSION. [BY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT. 1 CAPETOWN, Feb. 25. The commission appointed by the South African Government to choose a national flag is at present sitting in Capetown. Over five thousand designs have been submitted for them to select from. The first sitting of the commission was spent in discussion of a motion that the commission was of opinion that the Flag Bill should be dropped altogether, because if a flag were adopted not including the Union Jack it would leave an indefinite feeling of distaste among a large proportion of the nation. The mover and seconder of the motion expressed the belief that the country would never, as a whole, be satisfied with a flag not including tho Union Jack, and in view of the Government's statement that they could not consider the inclusion of the Union Jack, it would be wrong of the commission to choose what would only be a "second-best flag." There wag a long discussion on the motion, and marked divergence of opinion was shown. The chairman's view is understood to have prevailed—that it was the commission's duty, having been appointed in view of their agreement to the terms of reference, to choose a flag and let the Government decide whether to go on or not.
