RAILWAYS IN AFRICA.

EXTENSION OF THE SYSTEM ACTIVITY IN BELGIAN CONGO. [from our own correspondent. ] JOHANNESBURG, Feb. 25. Some idea of how the African railway systems have been developed during the last half century and are being developed to-day may bo gained from the fact that an unbroken journey from Capetown through the Union, Rhodesia and the Belgian Congo to Matadi, a town almost on the border of Angola and within a comparatively short distance of the west coast of Afnca—a journey of just on 3800 railway miles—will be possible within the course of the next three or four years. This is; according to a statement by the genera] manager of the Congo Railway, Mr. George Bousin. Railway construction in the Belgian Congo is proceeding with intense activity, says Mr. ...Bousin, and because of the fact that his own railway company had decided to embark upon an ambitious project at a cost of £2,000j000, to widen the gauge Of the present railway from 2ft. &in. to 3ft. 6in., and because the Belgian Government had decided on constructing lines all of 3ft. 6in. gauge, it would be possible for a traveller to pass from Capetown to Matadi without moving from the carriage into which his luggage was placed at Capetown.,
