ASSAULT IN CITY.

MAN STRUCK WITH BOTTLE. TERM OF IMPRISONMENT. Denial of a charge that lie assaulted Jock MeCormick on Friday evening was made by Francis Tanner, aged 22, in the Police Courft on Saturday. MeCormick, first waiter on the steamer Franconia, said be and two shipmates were on shore on Friday evening, and as he left refreshment rooms in Welleslev Street about 11 p.m. be was struck on the face by accused and then hit on the head with a bottle. He had never seen accused before and did not give any provocation. Hugh Glover, taxi-driver, who witnessed the incident, said accused first struck MeCormick with his fist and then bit him again with a bottle. Accused said the three men had come ashore looking for trouble and lie was the one they "clicked on." He had been attacked first and struck back only in self-defence. "Two months' imprisonment. It is a brutal thing to use a bottle," said the magistrate, Mr. Poynton.
