TAKAPUNA TELEPHONES.

CHANGE TO THE AUTOMATIC. MIDNIGHT NEXT MONDAY. The change-over of the Takapuna telephone system from manual to automatic will'take place at midnight next Monday. There are over 300 subscribers. Takapuna subscribers, which have been paying a rental of £6, will now be required to pay £9 10s annually. The reason for this is that the fees are regulated on a mileage basis. A description of the system and an offer to present subscribers to continue under the new system or dispense with a telephone altogether is embodied in a circular recently distributed by the Post and Telegraph Department. Only the Birkenhead, Avondale, Otahuhu, Henderson, Papatoetoe and St. Heliers' exchanges will have the manual systems when the Takapuna change-over becomes effective. It is anticipated that the Telegraph Department will shortly consider altering theso stations to the automatic system, but nothing definite has been decided yet. Arrangements arc being made with the department' to instal slot machines within the Takapuna borough.
