PILOT AND MASTER.

CONTROL OF A VESSEL. BREAKING OF A TOW-LINE. ECHO OF VISIT OF CARINTHIA. An echo of the recent visit of the Cunard liner Carinthia to Auckland was heard at the meeting of tho Auckland Harbour Board yesterday. Tho harbourmaster, Captain H. H. Sergeant, had reported that - when the vessel was leaving Auckland the master had assumed control of the steamer while one of the board's pilots was in charge, and that a tow line, valued at £34, had been broken.. The report was referred to the board's solicitors, who advised that, in their opinion, the master had no right whatever to interfere. with the pilot while the latter had control of the ship. After consideration of the reports in committee the board decided to request the Cunard Company to inform the master of the Carinthia and all other masters in its service, that drastic action would be taken if there was any further occurrence of a similar - nature, as such interference was a breach of tho pilotage . regulations. It was also decided to make a demand for immediate payment of the cost of tho tow rope.
