VICAR OF HAMILTON

RESIGNATION ANNOUNCED. [BT TELEGRAPH. OWN CORHESI'ONDENT. ] HAMILTON. Tuesday. Archdeacon Edmund Mortloek Cowie, TtSiO has tendered his resignation as vicar of St. Peter's Parish, Hamilton, is the eldest son of tho late William Garden Cowi«, Bishop of Auckland, and Primate of New' Zealand. Ho was horn at ]Jkshopscourt, Auckland on May 26, 1870, and lie received his education at Christ's College, Christchurch, and at Selwyn College, Cambridge. For 12 months he studied at Ely Theological College, and in 1893 he was appointed assistant curate at St. Michael's and All Angels', Portsmouth. He returned to New Zealand in ♦he following year and became chaplain to the Primate, while from 1897 until 1902 ho was diocesan missionary to the Diocese of Auckland. For the following six years he was vicar of Te Aroha, and in May, 1908, he became vicar of Hamilton, a position he has held ever since. In 1913 he was elevated to be Archdeacon of Waikato. Archdeacon Cowie was chairman -of the committee which made the F-rrangements for the constitution of the Diocese of Waikato, and after the diocese had been formed and the bishop elected, the archdeacon acted as the bishop's commissary for ordinary purposes, a position he relinquished when Bishop Cherrington was consecreated on December 12 Jast. In announcing his resignation on Sunday, Archdeacon Cowie said owing to the amount of work involved he could not carry on the two positions of vicar of Hamilton and Archdeacon of Waikato, and as the bishop wished him to retain the latter office he felt it necessary to ask to be relieved of the former. The liishop had consented to this course, and he would, retire from the position in May next. The following: appointments have been made in the Waikato Anglican diocese by Bishop Cherrineton: —Rev. R. W. W. Alexander, of Calcary, Canada, to he vicar of Taranaki East parochial district; M"- A- Swarhrick, Hamilton, chancellor of the diocese; Mr. A. B. Whyte, Hamilton, diocesan registrar.
