VISIT TO RAROTONGA.
GAY AND BRILLIANT SCENE.

After' many days of tropical rain the sun shone brightly at Rarotonga for the first landing ,of the Prime Minister, Mr J. G. Coates, on New Zealand territory this morning, on his return from tho Imperial Conference. t I
Alter official calls had been paid by tho Deputy-Commissioner, Mr. Savage, and tho administrative offlecrs, tho distinguished visitors were rowed ashore in an eight-oared barge. They were enthusiastically welcomed by a largo concourse of both races.
The brilliant colours of tho hibiscus plant and other tropical flowers, together with a display of patriotic flags, made a vivid setting for the sceno. The representative Arikis, Mataiapos and Rangitiras expressed their unfeigned delight in again welcoming Mr, and Mrs. Coates.
In his reply to tho addresses of welcome, Mr, Coates read a message from King George, which acknowledged the loyal tribute of thai Rarotongan people, and expressed His Majesty's continued regard for them. Mr. Coates expressed his satisfaction with tho work done at tho Imperial 'Conference, which, he said, would enhance the un : ty of all tho peoples of tho Empire.
In a brief reference to commercial matters, Mr. Coates indicated that he was making every effort to increase the Island trade, and he referred to the importance of fostering the study of tropical agriculture in»New Zealand's Pacific territories.
A motor excursion, a na'tive feast, and a reception in tho afternoon completed a delightful day. At Papeete Mr. and Mrs. Coates received a cordial welcome from tho Governor and" the British Consul. Fine weather was experienced during the voyage across the Pacific. All tho members of tho party are well.
