WOMAN TELLS FORTUNES.

TWO CHARGES PREFERRED. MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday. A long and varied story was told to each of two police matrons by Mabel Jennings recently when they visited her house to find out if she undertook to tell fortunes, and as the result she appeared before Mr. H. P. Lavrry, S.M., this morning on two charges of undertaking to tell fortunes. The woman, who was of middle age, was described as being in poor circumstances. She had been deserted by her husband. She was fined £2 and costs on one charge and convicted and ordered to pay costs on the other. The magistrate said there had been no evidence that this Avas a common practice with this woman and it was not a case for a heavy penalty.
