ANNUAL COUNCIL MEETING.

TRANSACTION OF BUSINESS.

Tho 21st annual meeting of members of the council of the New Zealand Institute of Architects was held at Hamilton to-day. # In the absence through illness of the president, Mr. Hurst Soager, the past president, Mr. W, M. Page, presided. Representltives- were present from all parts of the Dominion. The Mayor of Hamilton,, Mr. 3. R. Fow, welcomed the visitors.

The Minister of Health, Hon. J. A. Young, who attended the opening of the meeting, said he. appreciated the great influence of good architecture on public health and he expressed his wishes for the success of .the conference.

The Education Committed reported that details in relation to the taking over of examinations by the University of New Zealand had been dealt with and tho examinations had been held by • the university in' December for the first time, marking an epoch in the history of the institute. The Finance Committee reported an excess of income over expenditure of £196, the accumulated funds amounting to £912- The sum of £23 was paid during the year for the financing of branches. . The Practice and Discipline Committee submitted a revised code of ethics and reported that an amendment to the Institutes Act, giving the supreme council power to remove from the register the names of members found guilty of professional misconduct, had been lodged with the Government for consideration. The benevolent fund board reported no calls for financial assistance. The fund was in eredit to the extent of £225. A remit from tho Canterbury district branch that when conditions of contract are revised clause 23 bo amended, so that prime cost sums shall be quoted as r>ot costs, in lieu of "retail prica," was passed after discussion. The Hawke's Bay-Gisborne branch forwarded a remit drawing attention to tho fact that houses erected on loans from tho State Advances Department had co3t, as much as 30 per cent, more when ejected by builders when public tendors were not called. The remit urged that the attention of the Government be drawn to the advisability of making the calling of public tenders compulsory where State advances were involved. Tho remit was adopted. * # The following resolution, passed by the Architectural Education Committee, was approved:—That a candidate must pass the requisite number of testimonies of study before he is permitted to eit for the written subjects of the examination. He must further pass all the subjects of the preceding examination before proceeding to the next examination, except in cases where candidates have passed all the subjects except one. In such cases the candidate may only be permitted to sit for the next examination upon the special recommendation of the Education Committee.

Mr, E. H. Clere, of Wellington, was elected a fellow of the institute and Mr. H. Hyland, of Hastings, was admitted a member.

The annua! general meeting of members of the institute will be held to-morrow and the first meeting of the new council will be held on Friday.
