ENTERTAINING YACHTSMEN
SANDERS CUP CONTEST. POOR RESPONSE TO APPEAL. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.,] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday. "The result o£ the canvass was most' unsatisfactory. I do not think I have been associated with an appeal for funds in Christchurch that has produced such a poor result," said Mr. R. B. Owen, in submitting a report on a canvass made in the city for funds to entertain the members of visiting crews taking part in tahe coming Sanders Cup contest, to last night's meeting of the Canterbury Yachting Association.
Commenting on the report the chairman, Mr. W. T. Lester, stated that it was the first time Canterbury had had an opportunity of entertaining visiting yachtsnien. "No wonder we are called the 'dud' province," he said. " I cannot understand why the people should be so dilatory. The "sport is one of the finest there is and it is of national interest. It is about time Canterbury people woke up." Other members expressed disappointment at the unsatisfactory way the canvass had turned out.
"The trouble we are up against in raising funds," said Mr. Owen, "lies in the fact that everything, as far as the majority of thg residents of Christchurch is concerned, is taking place on the wrong side of the hills. Lytteiton Harbour is bej r ond their world. If the contests were being held on this side of the hills we would have, no difficulty in raising £1000."
