Addressing members of tho Women's Club, the National Council of Women, the Country Women's Association, the New Settlers' League, and representative citizens at the Town Hall on migration problems, particularly from the viewpoint of women in Great, Britain, Lady Alicia Cecil appealed for sympathetic treatment of new settlers, especially during the early stages of their career. Lady Cecil said she did not know what was coming over the modern generation. The modern girl preferred town life, with its picture shows and other attractions, and would sooner work in an office or shop or factory. At home they were trying to make girls understand that household work was one of the finest branches of work that a girl could undertake. If only its status were recognised throughout the Empire it would help tremendously. Many people will be put into mourning by tho death of tho Duchess of St. Albans, for her family circle is a largo one. Of her two married daughters Lady Moyra Cavendish, sister-in-law to tho Duke of Devonshire, is perhaps the bent known; one of Lady Moyra's daughters is married to Lord Cranborne, eldest son of Lord Salisbury, while another is tho wife of Lord Balcarres' son and heiir, Lord JJalnel. Lady Alise Beauclerk, tho late Duchess' unmarried daughter, lived at home with her mother. Her son, Lord Osborne Beauclerk, is married to the mother of the present Lord Waterfbrd. The present Duke of St. Albans has been an invalid since childhood and has therefore been unable to take up any of tho duties which would naturally devolve upon a person holding his rank and position. The family estate in Ireland has always been managed by the late Duchess, who was greatly beloved by tho j tenantry.
