BIGAMIST IN COURT.

ENGLISH WOMEN VICTIMISED. REAL WIFE IN NEW ZEALAND. (Received Jan. 30, 1.53 p.m.) A. and N.Z. LONDON, Jail. 29. Stanley Roberts, aged 45, was to-day brought up at the West London Police Court, on many charges of victimising women in various parts of the country. It is alleged that he has confessed to four bigamous marriages. The counsel for the prosecution said that at present he did not intend to proceed with the charges of bigamy. Roberts' real wife, said counsel, was undoubtedly alive and in New Zealand, but Roberts declared that she had left him three months after their marriage, and had since died. It is alleged that Roberts told a Mrs, Smith, with whom he lived at Hull, that he was heir to £35,000. He went through a marriage ceremony with Mrs. Smith, and then he absconded with £BBS of her money. Roberts also cheated Mrs. Smith's two sisters of £SOO. He also had posed as the head of a Sardine Company, and by imposing on Mrs. Warren, who lived at Southend, he secured £3OO from her. Roberts had courted two girls who lived at Bristol, and had defrauded their relatives of £320. Ia a statement accused gave details o! the amounts he had received from his various capes.
