Wellington has made an auspicious start in this season's series of Plunket Shield matches by gaining, a victory over Otago by 446 runs in the first match, which concluded at the Basin Reserve to-day. Wellington's two innings. realised 448 and 379 runs respectively. The: Otago team was dismissed for 207 in the- first innings and in tho second was faced with the tremendous task of knocking up 620 on ft crumbled wicket in order to stave off defeat. The leading, southern batsmen did ..not faro too well, and when stumps were drawn yesterday six wickets had fallen for 122. / \ Upon resuming to-day Otago met disaster almost immediately, Zimmerman being sent back to the pavilion after scoring only a single. Blamires was unable to make a long stay, and Torrance could not survive the opening > ball. However, Green tho visitors' wicket-keeper, who makes no claim to batsmanship, came to light with a forcing innings for 30. H. 0.
