The Pacific Cable Board's steamer Iris returned to Auckland at half-past six on Saturday morning after repairing the telegraph cable in Cook Strait. Owing to bad weather delaying the work the vessel was absent from Auckland lor five and a-half weeks instead of 12 days. After replenishing her bunkers and taking aboard stores and spare cable she is to sail toward tha end of this week for Australia to repair the Australian-Tasmanian cable. PAKEHA BRINGING IMMIGRANTS. L. D. Nathan and Company, Ltd., have received advice that the Shaw, Saviil and Albion steamer Pakeha was despatched from Liverpool on December 21 with a large number of immigrants for New Zealand and general merchandise from West of England ports for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin. She is due at Auckland on January 28. THE ROTORUA. With nearly, 1500 passengers, as well as a- large Quantity of general merchandise, the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Rotorua arrived; on Friday morning from London and Southampton. She is berthed at Prince's Wharf. Next Friday she is to sail for Wellington and Bluft to complete discharge, The voyage commenced from Southampton on November 17 and during the first three days from, port strong southwest gales and high seas delayed thesteamer's progress. Afterwards the conditions improved and for the remainder of the voyage generally fine weather prevailed. At Curacao she replenished her oil fuel and then proceeded to Panama. CARINTHIA ARRIVED. - - ■ Making _her second visit to Auckland the Cnnurd liner Carinthia arrived yesterday afternoon and berthed at Queen's Wharf. The liner is on a cruise round the world at New York on October 14, and she proceeded first to Havana, departing from there on October 18. The next day she encountered the hurricane which swept Havana and did enormous damage, besides killing many people. The. Carinthia experienced an increasing east-north-east gale early in the morning and at noon she was hove to. The hurricane reached its height at si>: in the evening, and it was then estimated that the wind was blowing at the rate of 90 miles an,.hour, the barometer reading being s!fU6in. .The liner's engines were then stopped and for the next four hours she rode out the gale like a duck with the wind and seas on her bow. At ten o'clock that night the conditions began to moderate, and the liner resumed her course and speed. Hor next ports of call were Colon, San Pedro, San Francisco, Hilo, Honolulu, Yokohama, Kobe.
