WEST COAST ROAD.

CRITICISM OF REPAIR WORK. OBJECTION TO A STATEMENT. Objection to statements made in a recent article in the Herald regarding repair work on the Waikumete-West Coast Road was expressed in the engineer's report submitted to the Waitemata County Council yesterday. The report stated "An unjust reflection is cast upon the council in reference to repair work on the Waikumete-West Coast Road. Besides being unjust, the statement made is untrue where it refers to waggon loads of clay being dumped on the road. The material being used is a local gravel, quite suitable for preparing: a sub-grade for metal. "The road in question runs for miles through land that is held by the Auckland City Council for waterworks purposes, and consequently is not ratable. The Government allowed the City Council to acquire this land to the impoverishment of the road without any provision for the maintenance of the road being made. The position is that any more that is expended by the county council on the. road .must; be taken from money provided by the ratepayers for upkeep of' their respective roadss of access' to ant? from their properties." The chairman, Sir. G. o'Halioran r remarked that the report explained itself, and on his motion it was adopted.
