GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. The Potoa mare Queen Rewa met with a slight mishap recently and will not be a competitor at Dargaville. This is bad luck for her connections, as her running at Takapuna suggested that she would be hard to beat in minor company at the northern fixture. Alonsoa and Creation are a pair that may receive good support in the Maiden Handicap at Dargaville to-day. The former is trained at Avondale by ,S. G. Lindsay and is reputed to be speedy, although she has not yet shown any form. The hardest for them to boat may be the three-year-old Corinax, who has been working well enough at Ellerslie to indicate that he will take a lot of beating. Festina Lente has been racing well at tho country meetings and may extend her record at Dargaville. She is an improving mare and has already won thrice this season in five starts. Right and Left has won the Dargaville C«i> two years in succession and should make another bold bid for honours to-day. Although beaten in a sis-furlong gallop on Tuesday by Passionate, who will be one of his opponents, the black gelding is pretty well and is bound to give his supporters a good run. Archibald has two engagements at Dargavilla to-day, but it is not. unlikely that he will forego his engagement in the cup in favour of the Avoca Handicap. Recent form points to Archibald having an especially good chance in the latter event and he will probably start at a short prico. Thursby has run several good races in decent company lately, although he has not managed to get into the money. Still his form has been of sufficient merit to bring his prospects at Dargaville under notice. Thursby has been hitting out satisfactorily' in his work and will not be neglected in his engagements at! the northern fixture. Tho two-year-olds Whakariti and Standfast have been making steady progress and •will make, their first appearance m public at the coming meeting at Ellerslie. The pair have not been hurried and may not be ready to show their yet, but both show some promise, and may be useful later on. Standfast is a half-brother to that good horse Te Monanui. The Te Rapa trainer J. F. Tutchen will bo represented in the hurdle events at the coming meeting at Ellerslie by Peter Maxwell, Rangatahi, and Kawa, and ho may obtain some success with such a capable trio. Peter Maxwell had his first start since racing at Riccarton in August in the Paterangi Welter at Te Awamutu last week and tan a creditable fourth. R. E. Thomson has been engaged to do the riding of the trio. W. Tozer has tired of Blue Sky. and the grey gelding is now being tfained by E. Rae, who will probably school him with a view to racing over hurdles. Cawnporo has a very healthy appearance and sprinted five furlongs nicely on Tuesday. The Lucknow gelding failed to win when racing in Sydney, in the spring, but he made several good showings and may be capable of doing better in some of his approaching engagements. There has been nothing special about the recent doings of Lomint, but she has been getting throucb plenty of _ sound work on the tan and has been moving freely. Now that the tracks are very firm J. E. Thorpe is not disposed to work her on the grass owing to the fact that she goes sore very quickly. Lomint is not a good prospect on hard ground, but she may go a good race first time out. Two wins from as many starts is Tinoiti's record, and she must be considered useful. Her victories have been attained in hack companv, but she is now out of that class and will have to compete among the open horses. Whether she will be capable of winning among good class at Ellerslie remains to be seen, but she should pay her way on the country circuit. Tho three-year-old Antrim Boy, who created a good impression when he won a couple of hack events at the Avonda'e meeting. is credited with training on nicelv since finishing third to Chamour and Royal Mint in the Normanby Plate at Ellerslie last month. On that occasion the heavy track conditions were considered unfavourable to him, and he ahnn'd be a hard one to beat in the Qiieen's Plate, a race in which horses of his age Have done extremely well. The promising hack Abbess, who easily disposed of a novice field at Taumamnui, has no engagements on the earlier days of tho comins meeting at El'erslie, but she is included am on? the entrants for the Grev Handicap on the fourth day. Abbess is undoubtedly a smart galloper and one that should be worth keeping in mind. The three-year-old Ateriria, who opened his winning account at To Awamutu last week, is an improving horse and he should register something better in the near future. Ateriria finished on at the end of six furlongs in his race at Te Awamutu in a stvle indicating'" that a longer journev would not trouble him. and h§ is a possibility for one of the hack events at the coming meeting at Ellerslie. AUSTRALIAN RACING. NEW ZEALAND HORSE SCORES. { A. and N.Z. SYDNEY. Dec. 15. At the Wyong meeting yesterday the New Zealand-bred gelding Absnrdura (9.3), won the Flying Handicap (6 furlo&gs). Lady Popinjay (8.12) finished second and Fall Never ,(8.7) third. Absuidum won by a length :n 1m 13is.
