UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

DECREASE IN POPULARITY. BURSARIES PROVING ATTRACTIVE The fact that university scholarships are beginning to lose their appeal for a great number of boys was, mentioned by Mr. F. W. Gamble, headmaster of the Mount Albert Grammar School, at the annual prize-giving ceremony last evening. Bursaries proved very attractive and pupils who, in earlier years, might have stayed on for a scholarship were now content with bursaries. He sympathised fully with the attitude, realising that a hoy with a higher leaving certificate was well enough equipped to commence his professional or commercial career. Personally he endeavoured to direct a boy's post-matriculation work as much as possible toward his future occupation.
