LAND DRAINAGE SCHEME.
USE OF ELECTRIC PUMPS. AKA AKA BOARD'S DECISION. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] PUKEKOHE, Monday. An arrangement to use electric pumps to give quicker and more effective discharge of water from the Mangawhera Creek into the Waikato River was arrived at at a meeting of tho Aka Aka Drainage Board. At a previous meeting, the board had decided to accept an oner to instal four pumps, of a capacity of 90,000 gallons per hour each, for £253, exclusive of the cost of power lines, provided the ratepayers concerned agreed to find 60 per cent, of the money. An undertaking to find this proportion was duly given by the ratepayers. The pumps are to be used to lift water from the creek over the floodgate into the river, the river level now rising above the creek level and closing the floodgate for varying periods. It is estimated that about 800 acres of land will directly receive better drainage through tho pumping scheme, while a further 800 acres will probably be benefited indirectly. The board has arranged to inspect the locality to decide what further stopbanking should be done.
