POLICE COURT NEWS.

CHARGES OF VAGRANCY. "PAST THE CENTURY MARK." "He ,is well past the century mark," said Senior-Sergeant Edwards, when William Williams, aged 66, was charged in the Police Court yesterday with vagrancy and with being drunk in Queen Street. Accused pleaded guilty to the second charge, but not guilty the first. Accused said he had earned 15s during the past week by gathering bottles. He could not do heavy work. The senior sergeant said accused had been before the Court 158 times. Last year he was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for vagrancy. Nothing could be done with him and it was really a kindness to send him to gaol for as long as possible. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, sentenced accused to three months' imprisonment. BREACH OF PROBATION. Peter Glen appeared on a charge of failing to comply with the terms of his release on probation. The assistant probation officer said that accused was placed on probation for one year on July 1, 1925. He last reported on January 5. He was ordered to make restitution of £8 10s, but had paid nothing. Accused was admitted to probation on a charge of false pretences, and at the same time was sentenced to three months' imprisonment on another charge. Mr. Hunt: He has absolutely ignored you. Accused said he had not reported or made restitution because of ill-health. He had been unable to obtain employment. A sentence of three months' imprisonment was imposed. OTHER CHARGES. A remand for a week was granted in the case of Harry Has well, who was charged with being drunk in Queen Street and with assaulting Sidney Gibson. The senior sergeant said accused had been sent to hospital as he had a small bone broken in his leg.
