OBITUARY.
MAJOR F. W. GASCOIGNE, [BX TELEGRAPH.'-'KRESS ASSOCIATION.] HASTINGS'. Monday. Major Frederick William Gascoigno, a veteran of the Maori War, died this morning, aged 88 years. • Born at Casrapore in 1838, ha came to New Zealand with his father, an officer oi the East India Company, in 1853. He joined the Colonial Defence Force in 1860, and subsequently joined Captain Eraser's expedition for service on the last Coast, and took part ra many important engagements in the Maori War. Major Gascoign e was for a time magistrate at Chatham Islands, after which he settled in Hastings, where he lived in retirement for nearly 30 years.
