MAKOTUKU STREAM BRIDGE. REPAIRING COUNTY ROADS. [BY Ti«LEGR AEH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] RAETIHI, Saturday. At the meeting of the .Waimarino County Council this afternoon "the Public Works Department informed the council that the Raetihi Borough Council had applied to .the Minister fox' a commission to be set up to inquire into the apportionment of the cost of the town bridge over the Makotuku stream. Mr. R. M. Watson,. S.M., had agreed to ,act as commissioner.

The council decided to contribute £BS toward the construction of a traffic bridge over the Wangaehu Rivef, giving access to Rangiwaea. It was decided to proceed with the proposal to take land for workmen's cottages and to charge surfacemen using the cottages a rental of 7 per cent, on the cost of erection.

The engineer reported that further slips and a washout on .the Pipiriki Road oc-_ eurred during the last period of heavy rains, but had been repaired. The roading under the slips on the Waipuna Road had been widened fox 1 wheel traffic. Slips had been mended on the Hukuroa Road. The slip on the Makakahi Road. would be cleared if possible this month and repairs 011 the Valley and Ohura Roads were being done. The Ohutu Road was being opened for wheel traffic; beyond Houghton's gate and small bridges were being erected. Slips were also being cleared from Boyd's and Parapara Roads. The Parapara Road would be at least two weeks before it was fit for motof traffic. Slip work on the Mangatiti Road was well advanced and the Erua Road had been cleared. The rose and carnation show and musical competitions were held yesterday in beautiful weather, people from all parts of the surrounding district being present. There was a very fine display of flowers. The show was opened by Mr. R. AY. Smith, M.P. Stalls and a baby show were also run in conjunction with the show and were well patronised. The musical competitions were a great source of attraction. These started on Thursday, the finals being reached last night. There were over 200 competitors and the standard was very creditable.

The Wanganui Education Board has decided that the project to establish a high school in Raetihi could not be supported, and a motion was passed sfc the last meeting that the Raetihi children attend the Ohakune School.
