CORNWALL PARK SCHOOL.

MINISTER OPENS CARNIVAL.

SQUAD DRILL AND DANCING.

The Cornwall Park School sports carnival and salo of work was officially opened on Saturday afternoon by the Minister of Education; Hon. R A. Wright, who was accompanied by Mrs. Wright. The chairman of the school committee, Mr. G. E. Smerdon. mentioned that last year the residents of tho district had raised over £SOO to enable the department to acquire an adjoining site for the proposed infant school. It was, therefore, possible to conserve. tiv> rest of the school grounds as a playing area. The object of the present carnival was to provide money for levelling the grounds fronting Wlietnrangi Road and laying out cricket and football fields.

After expressing his approval of tho manner in which the committee had cooperated with the department, Mr. Wright reminded the boys and girls of the advantages which present-day children enjoyed. Although education was free, their parents had to pay for it indirectly by taxation. A short address was also given by Mr. J. S. Dickson, M.P., who was making bis first public appearance since his return from the Empire Parliamentary Conference in Australia. He had been particularly impressed at all the schools'the delegation had visited by the way the children had followed tire singing of the National Anthem by the rendering of their own national song, " Australia." This evidence of loyalty made him hope now that a singing teacher had fwn appointed by the Education Department that a New Zealand song would* he com- " posed for our own school children*. C Exhibitions of squad drill anr] folk dancing were given by the pupils of the school. An extensive programme of races for children and visitors was carried out and aroused great interest. Good business was dono at a number of stalls, where cakes, needlework and produce wete offered for sale. Several side shows and competitions proved very popular with tho children. Music was supplied by the Indiana jazz band.
