NEW ZOO EXHIBITS.
ANOTHER PURGHASE MADE. CHIMPANZEES AND BIRDS. ' COST OF £456 INVOLVED. A number of rare and attractive exhibits for the Auckland Zoo were purchased yesterday by the Mayor, Mr. G. Bail don, on behalf of the City Council. The purchase was made from a collection landed by Mr. F. W. S. Mayer, of Sydney, who travelled from England on the Mahana in charge of the animals and birds rocently bought in London by the town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham.
Tho new purchases include a. pair of young chimpanzees, six pairs of toucans, seveu pairs of guinea fowls, one pair of Beeves pheasants, six toucanettes, one spoonbill, one scarlet ibis, and two pairs of lemurs. The total cost is £456 10s.
The pair of chimpanzees are at present in tho cage in which they were brought from England, but arrangements are being made to accommodate them near the big aviary and these quarters should be ready by Monday or Tuesday. Tho rest of the new exhibits, all of which are o{ an attractive nature, are now properly housed and on view.
Mr. Mayer left for Sydney by the Marama yesterday with the balance of his collection. Three sacred baboons which he brought to 4 Auckland on behalf of Mr. G. Chapman, of London, have been left at the Auckland Zoo, pending negotiations between the City Council and Mr. Chapman for purchase of the animals. The baboons are boing held at the zoo at Mr. Chapman's risk and should the council fail to buy them they will bo f>ent on to Sydney at his expense. . * •
