GREAT SIRE RECORDS. BY PHAETON. Absurd, the son of Sundridgo and Absurdity is included among the aires imported from England to New Zealand that have a fine record. Mr. C. E. Robertson, of Wellington, writes:—" At the end of tho late season the winnings standing to the credit of the progeny of Absurd in the two countries were:—New Zealand, £168,382; Australia, £54,950: total, £223,332. This total places Absurd in eighth place in the list. Ho has been represented on the turf hero for seven years, and for the past six years his average has been £27,379. Absurd, a 1909 horse, is still producing splendidly, and in Australia, an well as New Zealand,' he has a good lot of winners already this season. Should he be able to maintain his average for only four years, Absurd should establish a now record." Martiun is not, however, done with yet. One of the most promising yearlings in the Dominion at the moment, I learn from Mr. C, E. Robertson, is a colt by the Martagon horse from Kildee, owned by tho Masterton sportsman Mr. A. McDonald. The contribution of Star Stranger, Rapine, Naos, and Battlement to Martian's total in the recent Australian campaign exceeded £IO,OOO, and the total of tne Martagon horso is now very close to £350,000. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. At tho end of October, which represented the first quarter of the Australian racing season, the progeny, of Valais had won prize-money to the amount of £19,279. Rossendale was second with £15,229. In reciting the ill-luck that is met with on' occasions in running a stud the following appeared recently in a London journal: —"The month of September of the present year has, indeed, been an unlucky one for Mr. Soliy Joel, as hia best foal, a chestnut colt by Sicyon out of Daphne, died of a twisted £ut, as did Obstinate (dam of Set Fast). Ihen a good foal by Papyrus broke a leg when galloping in the paddocks, and a nico yearling colt by Pommern out of Purple and Gold hurt himself so badly that. he. too. had to be destroyed. In addition Smasher (dam of Applause. Battleship, and Crushed) injured hiS pelvis and died, and Pauline 11. (dam of Lady of Lyons and other winners) broke her shoulder, so had to be destroyed." NOTES FROM" ELLERSLIE. GOSSIP OF THE TRACKS. BY ARCHER. The Taumarunui meeting will bo held today;, and it should be one of the best the club has yet had. The acceptances indicate that there will be useful fields and some good racing should result. Many of the horsos engaged have more than one engagement, and the form may be tritky. The following horses may race well in their engagements: Abbess, Bright Comet, Ta Keroke Green Bonnet, Lightwood, Ngarara. Ngahinepouri, Tres Bon. Master Mind. Cantab. Miss Egypt, Spoony and Forest Gold. The Lucknow gelding Cawnpore, who has been racing in Sydney for several months, has returned to Auckland, wid is once again under the care of F. Gilchrist at Ellerslie. Cawnpore ran a few good races on tho other side, but he failed to Win. The imported mare White Bird is going along nicely in her work. She has not yet shown any form in the Dominion, but she may race in improved fashion at the summer meetings. White Bird is engaged at the Dargavillo meeting, which takes place this month. Abbess, who shaped well when she raced at Te Rapa last month, is freely engaged at Taumarunui to-day. This mare has done very little racing, but she is promising, and may be a good one to follow a;t tho country meetings. Currnghmore is an unlikely starter at Taumarunui to-day. It is more than likely that she will have her next outing at To Awamutu <next wesk. The disappointing Scot Free may have his first race over hurdles at Taumarunui to-day. The Marble Arch gelding has been shaping in his schooling efforts, and it will bo interesting to see how he shapes FORTHCOMING MEETINGS. TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. The Taranaki Jockey Club will hold its Christmas meeting on December 27 and 08, and the programme in connection therewith "a framed on line* _ that should ensure a most successful meeting. The leading event of the programme is the Chrstmns Handicap of £450. The " hack" division is well catered _ for, the Atiawa Cup, a stake of £3OO. with a cup of the value of £25, figuring on tho first day's programme Nominations for all events close on Monday next, at 9 p.m., with the secretary, Mr. E. P Webster, New Plymouth. TIRAU RACING CLUB. The Tirau Racing Club will hold its annual raca meeting on Saturday, January 1. The programme issued in connection therewith embraces seven events, with the Tirau Handicap of £4O as the leading event. From the programme, which will be found published in full in another column, it will be seen that nominations for all events close on December 11 with the secretary, Mr. E. W. Jordan. ALEXANDRA RACING CLUB. The Alexandra Racing Club will hold its annual race meeting at Pixongia on December 27. Nominations for all events close neat Wednesday with the secretary. Mr. k A. Chappell.
