ORPHANS' CHRISTMAS.

THE CHARITY BALL. In order to assist in raising funds for Christmas cheer for the inmates of orphanages in the Auckland district, a charity ball under the auspices of tho Shop Assistants' Christmas Campaign Fund Committee will be held at Dixieland on Tuiesday evening. The Dixieland management has handed tho dance-hall over to the committee for the occasion. In soliciting the aid of sympathisers to make the function an outstanding success tho committee points out that it caters for fifteen homes and orphanages, containing over 1000 inmates, and during the Christmas sea;son and on Christmas morning gifts and presents' aro given personally to each child and attendant. In addition, an entertainment is given by pierrots and minstrels. Special prizes are awarded for essay work, conduct, elocution and singing. Motor-car owners could assist by placing their cars at trie disposal of the committee for the purpose of 'conveying Father Christmas, helpers and entertainers, together with boxes of goods, to ithe orphanages and homes.
