RATES ON A CONVENT.
COUNCIL SEEKS APPEAL. APPLICATION AT CAMBRIDGE* [BY telegraph.—own correspondent. ] HAMILTON, Friday, Ail application for leave to appeal to the Appeal Court in the case of thai Cambridge Borough Council v. Madelaine Peters and others, representing the Cambridge Convent, was made by Mr. Johnson, on behalf of tho council, before Mr. Justice Herdman in the Hamilton Supremo Court. Mr, Kavanogh opposed tha application.. Mr. Johnson said that when the Cambridge Borough Council sued the sisters of the convent for rates on the convent residence, the magistrate gave judgment in the rating authority's, favour. * Tho matter was then considered by tho Supreme Court and was removed to the Court of Appeal, where three of the four Judges in the first division of the Court .gave judgment for the convent. Tho council now wanted the matter considered by the second division of tho Appeal Court. Mr. Justice Herdman said the application for leave to appeal should be dealt with by tho Judges who heard thu case. Ho thereupon adjourned tho application.-
