MAN CHARGED IN COURT. UNUSUAL DEFENCE RAISED. [by telegraph.—own correspondent.] DUNEDIN. Friday. Whoa Edward McLelland was charged in the Police Court this moi'ning with assuming the designation of a member of tho police force when ho was not a member of that body, Mr. Baylee, who appeared for him, raised the point that although men in various callings chose to adopt such titles as "superintendent," "inspector," ct "sergeant, ' they were riot arrested for assuming the designation of a member of the police force. Mr. Bayleo cnnteniiad that the titles used in the police force signified fank and were not confined i'O the force. Accused wag alleged to have said that he was a detective so that he could get into the jockeys' and trainers' room at Forbury Park on November 27. - He not guilty. Chief-Detecfciive Lewis said accused had represented himself as a detective here on holiday from Wellington. Evidence wns given that accused had attempted to obtain admittance to the jockeys' and trainers' room at Forbury Park by representing that he wa3 a detective from the North who was investigating a robbisry in Danedin.
