In the Magistrate's Court to-day John Scott, farmer, of Maungatautiiri, applied for a surety of peace order against a ! neighbour,, Edward Alien, juu. In evidence, plaintiff said trouble arose owing to defendant persistently failing to maintain his share of the boundary fence between their farms. Subsequent to plaintiff serving defendant with a fencing notice the men met at a fonai and after using bad language defendant assaulted plaintiff by hitting him with a fencing batten.

Defendant stated that what ho had done had been in 'self-defence.

The magistrate, Mr. Wyvern Wilson, ordered defendant to keep the peace for 12 months on two sureties of £i:'oQ each. Defendant was convicted on a charge of assault, with costs totalling £3 19s.
