SPEED OF LIGHT.

IMPORTANT DISCOVERY. NEW MEASUREMENTS TAKEN. PHILADELPHIA. Nov. 8. An announcement of a new rate of speed of light was a feature of the first day's session here of the National Academy of Science, Professor Michelson, of Chicago University, declared that light travelled at the rate of 299,796 kilometres (185,873.5 miles) a second, the old rate having been reckoned as 186,000 miles a second. The importance of the announcement lies in the fact that behind the speed of light is the secret of the speed at which the earth revolves, and the speed of the whole solar system through space. It is important also for the fact that it was on previous discoveries of the behaviour of light that Professor Einstein based his theory of relativity. Professor Michelson's statement is the result of many years of research. It is stated that the perfection of the interferometer, an instrument he invented years, ago, brings the new measurements to a precision previously unequalled.
