EXPORT OF PORK.

The facts quoted by Mr. D. Jones and Mr, E, S. Forsyth, addressing a gathering of farmers yesterday, should impress on all who hear or read them the possibilities of an export trade in pork. It is. not a question of making a beginning. The trade has already been begun, but the important suggestion was that it could be extended very greatly, to the manifest advantage of. the producers. The example of Denmark was quoted. Farmers may be growing a little tired of being told continually of what Denmark does and how it is done, but there is no escape from the example, for it is too pertinent to be missed. The Imperial Economic Committee, which has issued reports that appear progressively more valuable, says of the Danish output: "The by-pro-ducts of the Danish dairy industry, with other home-grown feedingstuffs, supplemented by imports of small grains, furhish a satisfactory ration for bacon pig production." Here is confirmation of what the speakers said yesterday about utilisation of skim-milk, the use of home-grown foodstuffs, and of grain. If Denmark can carry on successfully when grain has to be imported, should not New Zealand, which is capable of growing the grain, be able to enter the market with profit to the producers? Figures for 1924 show that out of the £105,447,000 Britain spent on imported meats, 48 per cent, went to purchase pig products. Foreign enterprise enjoyed the lion's share of this trade. If New Zealand needs a new outlet, wishes to develop an industry fitting in admirably with dairying, the opportunity surely is here. The field needs studying, the right quality of product must be sent, in fact there must be work before the deserved result accrues. The facts offered the farmers indicate that, with proper organisation, a great prospect of profitable expansion lies ahead of . those who - undertake -this enterprise*
