DOGS AT DEVONPORT.

BREACHES OF NEW BY-LAW. A number of owners of dogs appeared in the Police Court yesterday charged with breaches of the new by-law at Devonport, which prohibits dogs being in the main street or on the beaches unless attached to chains. The defendants were E. Ford, D. Mills, M. Carlyle, N. Cameron, G". Melville and A. Cooper. For defendants, Mr. Fraer said his clients took exception to the by-law, but they would admit the breaches. He asked that ligijt penalties should be inflicted, as these were the first prosecutions.

Counsel added that 47 shopkeepers in Devonport had been written to asking if they objected to dogs going unchained in the main street. Of these 28 replied that they had no objection, one stated he approved of the by-law, while 18 had not forwarded any reply. For the Borough Council, Mr. Watson said they were not asking for a heavy penalty, but they wished to draw attention to the by-law. The magistrate, Mr. Cutten, convicted defendants, and ordered them to pay costs.
