THE MELBOURNE CUP. TO-DAY'S GREAT RACE. THREE NEW ZEALAND HORSES. MANFRED AND HEROIC OUT. BY PHAETON. Spear/ell. who is voted equal to Pantheon, is also a welltested candidate and his victory over Windbug at weight-for-age last mouth, in a fastrun mile and a-hall. brought him many admirers. The withdrawal of Manfred, the outstanding public fancy, from the Melbourne Cup raco came as a sensational surprise. Tho scratching has hit the public heavily. At 3.30 p.m. Heroic was also scratched for the cup. The withdrawal of Manfred and Heroic has created a sensation in turf circles. Manfred's leg filled after Saturday, and an examination of Heroic to-day proved conclusively that ho would not be able to run. J. Coutts is to ride Limerick. A further sensation was caused by the scratching of Heroic. This has again badly hit the public.
