INFECTIOUS DISEASES.
DIPHTHERIA IN OTAGO.
RETURNS FOR DOMINION. [BY TEIiEORAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] WELLINGTON, Monday. The notifications of infectious diseases in the Dominion reported to the district health authorities for the week ended at noon to-day showed a decroaso of two when compared with the returns for the previous seven days. In Wellington scarlet fewer showed an increase. The most noteworthy feature of the Dominion returns was the phenomenal increase of diphtheria in the Otago district, there being 33 cases reported last week, as against one case the previous week. The Otago figures have been swelled by an outbreak at Kaitangata. Referring to the matter D*\ T. McGibbin, Director of Public Hygiene, stated tht the department was taking steps to deal with the outbreak. Diphtheria, he said, was unusual at this time of the year, being primarily an autumn and winter malady. The total Dominion notifications increased by 48 on those shown in the bulletin last week, when 168 cases were reported. During the week there were 21 deaths from infectious diseases.
