MARKETING STRAWBERRIES
RAILWAY FREIGHT CHARGES
ANOMALY IN THE TARIFF.
A private individual rnav send by the railway a crate of strawberries from Auckland to any station in the North Island for eightpence, but a grower who wants to exploit the Wellington market with his strawberries has to pay tho parcel rate of 3s a crate, and he will be fortunate if his berries are sent by one of the express trains. This was tho substance of a complaint made yesterday to tho Minister of Agriculture, Hon. 0. J. Hawken, by strawberry growers on Ridge Road, Mount Roskill. They suggested that there should be a flat rate of Is 4d a crate. The Minister was informed that the growers had been willing to guarantee the Railway Department minimum loads in order to obtain quick transport. The strawberry crop had to be marketed quickly, and when the Auckland market had a surplus of the fruit it was often the case that the Wellington market was bare.
Mr. Hawken promised to go into tho position. He said he realised that unless strawberries could be distributed quickly there was little chance of extending the industry.
