MERCER FLOODS.
Sir,—ln view of the continual recurring floods at Mercer and the stoppage of traffic on the Great South Road, also the ever-increasing amount of traffic on that road, is it not time some duplicate route was seriously considered? Pokeno to Paeroa offers an outlet, but to the majority of through travellers ii is taking them rather much out of their direction. There is another route which if completed would be much faster and cheaper than the present route, besides very little risk of landslides, washouts or floods. The route I suggest is Pokeno to Waitakaruru, thence along the western edge of the Hauraki Plains, just under the foothills all the way through Torehapa, Ivaihere, Patetonga to Morrinsville, 40 miles of a dead level and almost straight road through thousands and thousands of acres of very fertile dairying country, which is already badly in need of en outlet. On this route there would be only 12 to 14 miles of new road to be made to join up the dead ends at Waitakaruru and Patetonga. Traveller.
